Frequently Asked Questions
Do you provide telehealth services?
Yes. We offer HIPAA compliant telehealth physical therapy across New York City. Learn more on our Telehealth page.
What happens during my first visit?
Your therapist will review your paperwork and any referral if you have one, copy your insurance card, and complete a thorough evaluation. This includes your medical history, current symptoms, pain triggers and relievers, how symptoms affect daily life, your goals, and any tests or procedures related to your health.
The objective exam may include palpation, range of motion testing, muscle strength testing, neurological screening, special tests, and posture assessment. Your therapist will then create a plan of care with your input, including visit frequency, expected duration, home program, and goals. We coordinate with your physician when needed.
What do I need to bring?
Bring your referral if you have one, payment information, and your insurance card. For Workers’ Compensation bring the claim number and case manager contact. For auto insurance or attorney lien bring that information as well.
How should I dress?
Wear loose, comfortable clothing that allows access to the area being treated. Shorts for knee problems, a tank top for shoulder problems, and loose layers for low back exams are helpful.
How many visits will I need?
It varies by diagnosis and goals. Some patients need a single visit, others need a few weeks or months. We re evaluate progress regularly and share updates with your doctor when appropriate.
Why is physical therapy a good choice?
Physical therapists are movement experts who treat the source of pain, not just the symptoms. Evidence shows PT can reduce pain, improve function, and help many patients avoid unnecessary imaging, medication, or surgery.
What do physical therapists do?
We assess movement and nervous system function, create individualized exercise and manual therapy plans, and teach self care strategies. We also help prevent injury, improve ergonomics, and guide safe return to work, sport, and daily life.
Why are people referred to physical therapy?
Common reasons include pain with movement, limited range of motion, weakness, balance problems, or difficulty with daily tasks such as walking, stairs, or lifting.
Can I start PT without a doctor’s referral?
Yes. New York allows Direct Access to physical therapy. You can begin care without a prescription. In most cases you may be treated for up to 30 calendar days before a signed plan of care or prescription is required. See our Direct Access page for details.
Who pays for treatment?
Most health insurance plans cover physical therapy. Visit our Insurance Information page for details, and contact us so we can verify your benefits.
Who will see me?
You will be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist. We prioritize one to one care and continuity with the same therapist whenever possible.
Are there different PT specialties?
Yes. Examples include orthopedic, sports, geriatric, vestibular and balance, hand therapy, pediatric, and more. Many therapists pursue advanced board certifications.
Is physical therapy painful?
Treatment aims to reduce pain. Some conditions can be sensitive during early recovery. Communicate with your therapist so we can adjust intensity and pacing to keep care safe and effective.
What types of treatments might I receive?
Treatments may include therapeutic exercise, manual therapy, mobility work, posture and gait training, balance training, and education. When appropriate we may use modalities such as heat or cold, electrical stimulation, or ultrasound.
What if my pain returns?
Call us. A brief tune up, program update, or visit with your physician may be recommended. Early attention usually prevents small setbacks from becoming larger problems.
Can I choose any physical therapy clinic?
In most cases yes. We participate with many insurance plans and can help you confirm coverage and options.
Is my therapist licensed?
Yes. All physical therapists and physical therapist assistants are licensed by the state.
How do I choose a physical therapy clinic?
Look for licensed providers, a thorough first visit, clear goals, hands on care plus exercise, convenient location and hours, good patient experience, and insurance participation. Talking with the therapist before the first visit can also help.
